How do others define designers’ core competencies? It depends. Chris Conley, who teaches at the Institute of Design in Chicago, has presented seven competencies he believes are at the core of design. They are:

  • The ability to understand the context or circumstances of a design problem and frame them in an insightful way
  • The ability to work at a level of abstraction appropriate to the situation at hand
  • The ability to model and visualize solutions even with imperfect information
  • An approach to problem solving that involves the simultaneous creation and evaluation of multiple alternatives
  • An ability to add or maintain value as pieces are integrated into a whole
  • An ability to establish purposeful relationships among elements of a solution and between the solution and its context
  • An ability to use formto embody ideas and to communicate their value

Google Love

It seems that Google, along with other popular search engines, like to “decorate” their logo’s depending on the holiday. I am loving Google’s new logo design today. Not only does it celebrate Martin Luther King Jr, it is pretty nifty design.

Fashionable Plates

Kris is making ceramics and showed a preview of the plates she just painted. These are so lovely. I can’t wait to see it in her etsy shop.

Life & Whatnot

Life has been really busy lately. I have been getting some freelance work, hanging out with my boy, and  biting my nails off  for the Red Sox games, and the like. I have also been packing up my stuff since I am going to be moving in with the boy soon.

Also… I finally finished my portfolio site. I needed a new layout and to have more of my recent work.  I also messed around with a java script that made the images show up in a hella cool fashion. Go to: http://www.creativeprocess.org.

Anyways time to get back to life… or something.
